What I Used to Believe

When I was a 2x2 in Oregon, this is what I used to believe from what I learned in meetings:

  1. that the workers were apostles of God.
  2. that I was part of the church that Jesus started from the beginning (of what I didn't know)
  3. that God intended we meet in homes for Sunday AM meeting
  4. that people who met in church buildings were going to hell
  5. that if a preacher was not a worker then they were a false preacher and of the devil
  6. that I needed to profess (stand up in a tested meeting to indicate your belief) in the meetings in order to be saved
  7. that workers had to go out in pairs or they were not true preachers
  8. that you were more respectable if you were a worker than if you were married
  9. that you should revere workers
  10. that workers were the ones you were supposed to go to if you had a problem
  11. that workers knew everything about the Bible
  12. that the Bible was a closed book to people who didn't go to meetings
  13. that our unprofessing neighbors were going to hell
  14. that I needed to give my testimony each Sunday or else something bad would happen
  15. that I needed to have an interesting testimony to please my parents and sound like I meant it
  16. that people really didn't care about my soul as much as they cared about my Sunday testimony
  17. that worldly possessions were to be despised
  18. that it was evil to have a TV in your home
  19. that women needed to have long hair and wear them in a bun for meetings
  20. that professing people were better than unprofessing people
  21. that I was better than other people who didn't profess
  22. that people who left meetings and then came back were prodigals
  23. that you had more to brag about in meetings if you were second, third or fourth generation professing
  24. that I needed to use "we", "thee" and "thou" when I prayed in order to respect God in prayer
  25. that I should only use the KJV Bible
  26. that I was better than others because I went to meetings
  27. that I knew the scripture better than others because I listened to the workers in meetings
  28. that worldly people were to be despised
  29. that overseers were like Gods
  30. that professing sometimes wasn't good enough, I needed to be "possessing" (though I didn't know what that really meant)
  31. that God was using me more if I brought people to gospel meetings
  32. that it was evil for a church to have a name
  33. that our church had no name (even though we called ourselves "the truth")
  34. that the workers were apostles and the apostles were the first workers
  35. that Paul the apostle was an overseer
  36. that I needed to be baptized by a worker in order to take the bread and fruit of vine in Sunday AM meetings
