2x2 Interpretation of Matthew 10:9

Scripture

Mat 10:9 Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses,
Mat 10:10 Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.

My Take

Jesus sent out the twelve apostles to the Jews, not gentiles at this time. The reason he told them not to take extra provisions for their journey was because he was going to provide for their needs: "The workman is worthy of his meat".

For example: If an employer said to me, "Brad, I want you to go to Chicago and sell 500 widgets. Don't take any of your money with you, extra clothing or supplies, because you'll be working and I will take care of you." I wouldn't interpret that as anyone telling me to sell anything and give it away, be poor or homeless.

Law at the Time

The law at the time in Israel was that you could go into your neighbors field and eat your fill. You could not fill up a bag of his wheat or corn, but you could eat your fill. The apostles could eat wherever they went without going hungry.

Lev 23:22 And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not make clean riddance of the corners of thy field when thou reapest, neither shalt thou gather any gleaning of thy harvest: thou shalt leave them unto the poor, and to the stranger: I am the LORD your God.
Deu 23:24 When thou comest into thy neighbour's vineyard, then thou mayest eat grapes thy fill at thine own pleasure; but thou shalt not put any in thy vessel.
Deu 23:25 When thou comest into the standing corn of thy neighbour, then thou mayest pluck the ears with thine hand; but thou shalt not move a sickle unto thy neighbour's standing corn.

Commandments of Jesus to Go Into All World

Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Jesus did not tell his apostles and disciples to go out in pairs, or not make provision for themselves then. Paul, the apostle of Jesus Christ, worked for a living.

Act 20:33 I have coveted no man's silver, or gold, or apparel. Act 20:34 Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. Act 20:35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
1Co 9:18 What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.
1Co 9:19 For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.

Lie of workers

The workers teach people who want to be workers to sell everything and give it away (usually to them). They use these verses out of context to insinuate that people need to get rid of stuff (so they can have money from its sales).

My Take on How the Workers Would Rewrite This Passage

Don't take with you gold, silver, or money in your wallet, not even your wallet for your trip in the fields, nor an extra coat, or extra shoes or a walking stick: for the workers want all your money and your poverty can be used to advantage by older workers so that people will pity young workers, give them money and overseers and older workers can take it from you at conventions.

I grew up in the Workers' Way and saw that the workers very softly and sweetly taught subtle lies in guile; I learned to associate "kindness" and "nice"-acting people with lies. I became confrontational to get answers. Now I'm learning to speak the full truth in love.
