Controlling Myths

Controlling Myths in the 2x2 Cult

There are many myths perpetuated by 2x2s in an attempt to control people.

  • This fellowship was started by Jesus on the shores of Galilee - Actually it was started by William Irvine in the 1890's. Many followers believe this group was started by Jesus and this myth is heavily relied on when they make decisions as to whether they should leave the cult or not. If they saw it as just another cult, they would be quicker to leave.
  • The workers give up so much for you - This is used to get people to be less upset when workers offend others. The facts show otherwise. After living around workers, I've found that they love the freedom from responsibility. They don't have to pay bills, they don't have a spouse, I've heard them laugh at how women look ugly as they grow older, they don't care about lasting friendships, they aren't honest about what's going on. They don't give up getting married to become a worker, they don't want the responsibilities of being married.
  • You need to go to meetings- This myth is hammered into 2x2 kids from the beginning. Their mind control tactics lose effectiveness when the meeting/sessions are missed. That is the true reason. You slip from their grasp. Being a follower of Christ is not dependent on the number of meetings you attend. Besides, there isn't much to be learned that is good at meetings.
  • The workers don't ask for money- That is a lie. Every year the overseer/ head worker requires all the workers to give him their money. The workers teach that they are homeless and expect people to pity them and give them money. They collect money in hand shakes at meetings. They are in the business of collecting money.
  • This way was from the beginning- This is taught in many areas. The fact remains that William Irvine started the cult about 1890 in Ireland. People can do research and read about it in newspaper reprintings.
  • The workers can teach the truth because they don't have financial pressures of buildings- The fact remains that workers are afraid to teach anything from the Bible that their local overseer doesn't agree with. If they do, they may lose their "place" in the work or be removed to a remote field where they don't collect much money.
  • All other churches are evil. They are the one true way.- Jesus is the Way, not them. The same accusations that they make against other churchers are true of themselves. They just fantasize that they are the "chosen ones", the "remnant".
