Matthew 18:8-9

Mat 18:8 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.
Mat 18:9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.

Questions

  1. Have you ever heard of someone in the Bible cutting off a body part to become more righteous?
  2. Have you ever had your hand offend you? your foot?
  3. What do doctors do (if patients allow them to) when someone has cancer in their body?

I am not advocating anyone cut off literally a body part

My Thoughts and Opinion

When I was a kid, I thought Jesus Christ was advocating cutting off body parts.

Certainly, I have heard of people being bit by a snake and they have cut off their finger or hand to save their own life. I agree with this. I have heard of a 2x2 worker who cut off his penis and threw it in a river. I don't agree with this myself. I think it would be hard to go pee and that he neede his heart changed. I don't know if the man was gay, or having trouble with adultery, but it seems extreme to me. I think a person could cut off much of their own body and still sin in their heart. Jesus Christ said not to look after a woman to lust after her in your heart. So a man would need to pluck out his eyeballs. Then he would be a burden to society. But I finally found something that helped me understand this better.

Elsewhere in the Bible, it says that we are all members of one body, with Christ as the head.

1Co 12:14 For the body is not one member, but many.
1Co 12:15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
1Co 12:16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
1Co 12:17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?
1Co 12:18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.

There are many verses in the Bible that refer to us being like members of one body (the church) with Christ being the head. So this makes sense to me that if there is an offender (unrepentant) in the church, it is better to remove the offender than to let the whole church be damaged.

Here, God was upset with the church in Thyatira because they had not removed a woman who was teaching people to fornicate

Rev 2:20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.
Rev 2:21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.
Rev 2:22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.
Rev 2:23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

Some people say you are to let God cleanse the church, but God has said that we are to remove offenders. Allowing people to teach others to commit fornication is offensive and can destroy the church.
