How I Got Involved
As a worker, my companion and I "tested" meetings to see if anyone would profess. The reason I got involved in "testing" meetings was because I became a worker, and well, that's what workers do, is "test" meetings. That's how easy it is to get caught up in this mess. But first, let me explain what the Bible says:
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. - Romans 10:9
Please pay careful attention. The followers didn't know Jesus (As a worker I didn't even know or believe that Jesus Christ is God until after I got out of the cult) so they could not believe in Jesus Christ. Also, the workers plan it so that people are singing. They cannot confess with their mouth because they are singing. It's very subtle and tricky
Test - When the workers "test" a meeting, it means they are giving a person a chance to become a follower by standing to their feet during a hymn. It is usually quite staged. Sometimes someone may stand to their feet and surprise the workers. Afterwards, people will say "I was so surprised Billy Joe stood up. Ain't that wonderful?" But usually, someone stands up in the meeting who has already talked with the workers.
Profess - To stand to your feet when workers "test" a meeting. Ok, I know this is confusing. You may be thinking that profess means to "speak forth or confess somehing". Well, there are other meanings that 2x2s have. It's more in line with "Affirm one's faith in or allegiance to (a religion or set of beliefs)". And this profession is not out loud. They don't profess openly with their mouth. In fact, they cannot. Everyone is singing so they don't get a chance. If they would holler out "I believe in Jesus!", everyone would turn around and think they were a freak! The meetings are planned so the person cannot profess Christ. They are stuck with another definition of affirming their allegiance with the workers.
Professing - In allegiance with the overseers, senior workers, workers, elders and the other followers. As in "I have been professing (in allegiance with the workers..) since I was ten years old."
Meetings and Missions
Throughout the year, we rented a hall and preached about the 2x2 way and nice thoughts that we added to the Bible. To be clear, our mission as workers was to recruit people. The people who followed the movement, would invite people to these meetings in order to recruit them. We called them "strangers". When the followers who invited them told us they were ready to become a follower also, then we would consider "testing" the meetings to lock them in.
After we found out who wanted to profess, we would talk with the overseer to see if they approved. It may be a casual call, updating the overseer on what was going on in the field. The overseer may travel to our meetings and show that he is with us and approves of our preaching. The older worker would tell the overseer who wants to profess and if their are any situations that he needs to be aware of. The overseer then either expresses his concern or gives his approval to "test" the meeting for this person to "profess".
After we have the overseers permission, we may make an appointment with them and confirm the person's decision to "profess". After their decision had been confirmed, we would explain to them how "testing" the meeting worked and if they wanted to be one of us, they would need to stand while we sang the hymn.
Here's a little sketch so you can picture it
Overseers and workers follow tradition handed down to them of "testing" meetings
At the meetings, here's how it would go. First, the meeting proceeds like a typical meeting. But their is anxiety because it is usually the last meeting of a "mission". It's now or never for folks to become part of "God's way" and the only group going to heaven. The pressure is on.Just before the last hymn, the meeting takes a turn for the worse:
What The "Professing People" Didn't know
There are two things they didn't know. First, this practice if not of God. The Bible teaches that a person must believe in Jesus Christ, not a group of people. Also, the Bible teaches that a person is to confess with their mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord. As a worker, we never told people they were saved if they professed. Most people just thought that they would be if they professed. This was a dangerous thing. They were deceived.
Rom_10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Confusion not Joy and Peace
The person receives a spirit that is not of God. After I "professed", I was horribly confused. On the drive home, I cried. My mom asked me why I was crying. She probably said it must be because you are so happy. But I wasn't happy inside. Something strange had happened and I didn't know what. It was until I was 37 years old when I realized that to receive Jesus Christ into my life is to be born again. Being born again is an awesome experience and filled me with peace and joy. This was totally unlike my experience with "professing" or "offering for the work".
Receiving Spirit not of GodThere was a spirit involved in the meeting. But I didn't know their were evil spirits and the Spirit of God. I had received an evil spirit
